Central Florida Legends Marathon

7 Experiences You’ll Only Have at the Central Florida Legends Marathon

Have you heard? A new marathon is coming to Central Florida!

Oak-tree canopied paths provide a beautiful setting for crushing your running goals this fall. The route is flat, fast, and is a USATF Certified Boston Marathon Qualifier. The Central Florida Legends Marathon offers paved trails and roads through Old Florida on the Spring-to-Spring Trail and East Central Regional Rail Trail. If you want small-town charm through minimally developed land, Central Florida Legends Marathon is for you.

The Central Florida Legends provides three options for your running goals:

  • Skunk Ape Full Marathon (26.2 miles)
  • Mermaid Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
  • Fountain of Youth 5K (3.1 miles)

All distances run on paved trails and roads with plenty of shade. Starting and finishing in gorgeous Gemini Springs, full and half runners take the scenic Spring-to-Spring Trail into historic Enterprise and past Lake Monroe under moss-draped oaks. About one mile past Green Springs is the turn-around point for half marathoners.

Full marathoners continue onto the East Central Regional Rail Trail for more rural and beautiful views of natural lands and a few farms. Look for the donkeys, horses, cows, and turkey that often come to the fence to say good morning!

Read on to discover seven experiences you’ll only have running the Central Florida Legends Marathon.

1. Supporting Local

The Central Florida Legends Marathon is hosted by the West Volusia Runners and is managed and timed by Runner’s High Timing and Race Management. Everyone involved lives in the area and planned this route to show other runners what a beautiful corner of Old Florida we have the privilege to run in. Your dollars will support local businesses and the people who own them.

2. Cheering and Support at Legends Marathon Provided by the West Volusia Runners

I might be biased but West Volusia Runners (WVR) is the best running club around. I’ve been a member since 2012 when I was brand new to running. I have since completed nearly 70 half marathons, 5 full marathons, and two 50k’s thanks to the support and encouragement of my WVR running family.

WVR is made up of over 300 members with very different paces and goals. The one common factor is to support and encourage all runners. WVR members will be running, cheering, and volunteering at Legends. A few are running their first half or full marathon while others are trying to Boston qualify or meet time goals.

Come run and celebrate your legendary victory with us!

3. Crushing Your Goals with West Volusia Pacers

The full and half marathon distances will have pacers available to help you meet your goals. Whether you want to qualify for Boston, set a new personal record, or just finish in one piece, there is a pacer for you.

Pacing is provided by West Volusia Pacers—a team of talented and experienced runners from the West Volusia Runners club. I know most of the pacers personally and they are awesome people! Check them out on their Facebook page, West Volusia Pacers.

4. Meeting Monroe and a few other Central Florida Legends

Legend has it that Florida is home to the skunk ape—the half ape and half skunk relative of Big Foot. There have been sightings all over the state for decades. Who knows, but if it’s totally unbelievable, it’s probably true in Florida!

What I do know for sure is that Monroe, Central Florida’s resident skunk ape race ambassador, is friendly and loves to run. Watch for him out on the course. This is his first marathon! He loves to cheer runners on and be in selfies.

Plus…there may be a few mermaids, gators, and manatees out there too!

5. Running in the Unspoiled Beauty of Old Florida

I can’t say enough about the unspoiled beauty of this trail and the two springs. Gemini Springs and Green Springs are both county parks with their own paved and unpaved trails, natural springs, and other amenities. Check them out before or after the race if you can.

Here are a few photos from throughout the route to show you Old Florida beauty.

6. Central Florida Legends Marathon is a Green Race

To help preserve all of the unspoiled lands along the route, the Central Florida Legends Marathon is a green race. This means you can enjoy your run knowing:

  • No single-use plastic cups or race bags will be used.
  • Race shirts are provided by Recover brand shirts and are made from recycled materials.
  • We are working with a company to compost food waste.
  • All packaging materials will be recycled.

Runner’s High Timing and Race Management and the West Volusia Runners are committed to sustainable practices so everyone can experience Old Florida.

7. Trailgating to Celebrate Your Legends Marathon Finish

Enjoy post-race beer and barbecue in the park with all of your new friends from West Volusia Runners. The post-race festivities will be at Gemini Springs near the finish line. Additional vendors will be there too. Pull up a chair and stay a while because WVR knows how to throw a party!
